Chapter Seven
âHow was she today?â Courtney rubbed Peppaâs ears as she walked into the office of the Curly Bay Pet Hotel and Rescue. She had worked the Apple Jubilee all day alongside Jessi. Dora had held the fort down, and Emily had taken the day to rest and make a few phone calls.
âBusy. Very, very busy,â Dora said as she organized a rack of tiny bows in preparation for the next day. Several of them had been made by Emily and sported little felt apples. âI didnât think it would be a problem to let her roam freely through the place since she always does when sheâs here with you, but she got into everything!â
âYou did!â Courtney said in an astonished voice to Peppa. The dog took it as being playful and began hopping around Courtneyâs feet. âWhat did she do?â
âHa! What didnât she do? Thatâs the question. She got a hold of one of my brushes and chewed the handle into nothing by the time I found out. She nosed her way into one of the dog kibble bins, and she scratched so hard at the door to the cat room that she took some of the paint off.â
âSheâs been pretty crazy about cats lately, ever since Granite came to stay with us. You should see them in the evenings. They just curl up together like theyâve been friends their whole lives. Peppa even gets along with my neighborâs cat.â
âIs this the neighbor whoâs building the new Website?â Dora moved to the other side of the room to rinse out the large sink that served as a doggie bathtub.
âYes, and Iâm incredibly grateful for him. I really donât want to do it myself.â
âNeither do I!â Dora said with a laugh. âI know everyone loves it, but Iâd get along just fine if we didnât have the Internet.â
Courtney had seen Dora scrolling through social media and looking up cute puppy photos, so she doubted it, but she wasnât going to argue. âAre you doing all right working here so much by yourself? Iâm happy to trade you if youâd like to work the jubilee instead.â
Doraâs lips pursed as she shook her head. âNo, thank you. There are too many people there, and too many animals here who need me. Iâve had a whole slew of new appointments this week. Apparently, everyone wants their dogs groomed in time for the big parade on Saturday, and word is already starting to spread about these apple bows.â
âIâll be sure to tell Emily. Sheâs done a wonderful job. I honestly think that with enough time and material, she could easily make a new Admiral Apple costume.â Courtney admired the adorable little bows her cousin had made, planning to put in an order.
âMaybe she could, but that doesnât mean anyone would wear it. Iâve got a friend thatâs on the jubilee committee. She told me last night that Matt McLaughlin has refused to make any appearances at the Apple Jubilee events until the costume is found.
