Chapter Seven

“How was she today?” Courtney rubbed Peppa’s ears as she walked into the office of the Curly Bay Pet Hotel and Rescue. She had worked the Apple Jubilee all day alongside Jessi. Dora had held the fort down, and Emily had taken the day to rest and make a few phone calls.

“Busy. Very, very busy,” Dora said as she organized a rack of tiny bows in preparation for the next day. Several of them had been made by Emily and sported little felt apples. “I didn’t think it would be a problem to let her roam freely through the place since she always does when she’s here with you, but she got into everything!”

“You did!” Courtney said in an astonished voice to Peppa. The dog took it as being playful and began hopping around Courtney’s feet. “What did she do?”

“Ha! What didn’t she do? That’s the question. She got a hold of one of my brushes and chewed the handle into nothing by the time I found out. She nosed her way into one of the dog kibble bins, and she scratched so hard at the door to the cat room that she took some of the paint off.”

“She’s been pretty crazy about cats lately, ever since Granite came to stay with us. You should see them in the evenings. They just curl up together like they’ve been friends their whole lives. Peppa even gets along with my neighbor’s cat.”

“Is this the neighbor who’s building the new Website?” Dora moved to the other side of the room to rinse out the large sink that served as a doggie bathtub.

“Yes, and I’m incredibly grateful for him. I really don’t want to do it myself.”

“Neither do I!” Dora said with a laugh. “I know everyone loves it, but I’d get along just fine if we didn’t have the Internet.”

Courtney had seen Dora scrolling through social media and looking up cute puppy photos, so she doubted it, but she wasn’t going to argue. “Are you doing all right working here so much by yourself? I’m happy to trade you if you’d like to work the jubilee instead.”

Dora’s lips pursed as she shook her head. “No, thank you. There are too many people there, and too many animals here who need me. I’ve had a whole slew of new appointments this week. Apparently, everyone wants their dogs groomed in time for the big parade on Saturday, and word is already starting to spread about these apple bows.”

“I’ll be sure to tell Emily. She’s done a wonderful job. I honestly think that with enough time and material, she could easily make a new Admiral Apple costume.” Courtney admired the adorable little bows her cousin had made, planning to put in an order.

“Maybe she could, but that doesn’t mean anyone would wear it. I’ve got a friend that’s on the jubilee committee. She told me last night that Matt McLaughlin has refused to make any appearances at the Apple Jubilee events until the costume is found.
